As the current voting registration continues, there are lots of shortcomings surrounding the exercise across Oyo federal constituency, especially in Atiba local government when some thugs decided to disrupt the registration exercise in Ashipa. The registration of first time voters- those who have just reached 18years of Age and those who have not registered before- which was slated to start on Wednesday August 20 till Sunday 24, 2014 has not been going on in a peaceful atmosphere for ward 8 in Atiba Local Government. This ward has seven (7) polling units, but the exercise is being conducted in a single unit, at Ashipa. That is, people across the ward had to assemble in one place to register their names. The implication is that people from Oroki, Erelu, Aatan, Opabode, Abolupe and others all have to be in Ashipa to register. As can be expected, it has been very rowdy. And this is how it’s going on at ward 9, Saabo and other Local governments as well.
Thus, the registration process has not been going on in a peaceful manner. At the time of this report (Friday, 22ndAugust), there are nothing less than 500 people on a queue who wish to register but going through some difficulties, the INEC officials are not able to register more than 30 people on a day so far , there are only two of them there to attend to people. The computer using for registration is not all that good, when it works for 2hours, it will need another hour before it will start working again. This is part of the time that will be use for that day, and initially they arrived at the registration centre at 10am. Also, there are some unscrupulous elements at the registration centre whose aim are not to register but to cause chaos at the registration centre so as to hinder people from registering.
These are some of the problem that people are facing in getting them registered for them to be eligible to vote in the coming general election. And the normal day for this registration exercise is 5 days in which the closing date is Sunday, but the indication is that this will not be enough for the registration exercise to be successful. In the past, the exercise has been conducted polling unit by polling unit, making it easier for people to get themselves registered. We call the attention of the authorities involved to look into this and find the possible means to eradicate the problem.
Finally, the information this reporter gathered from official sources is that everyone that could who are not able find their name at the INEC official list at the last exercise should be at the INEC office in their various Local Government on the 15th of September to report their various problem and never bother to register again to avoid the problem of double registration. If we kept silent about some major issues in our environment without calling for the attention of those that will help us to find solution to them, we might not be able to solve them on our own. That is why we are calling on those who it might concern to assist the masses in order not to disenfranchise them of getting registered without much stress.
