An inspection team deployed by Oyo Global Forum visited the construction site of the new Akesan Market, on December 1 2020. The total reconstruction of the Market followed the unfortunate ravaging fire incident of January 5. That incident prompted repeated calls to Oyo State Government by the OGF for a timely reconstruction of the market.
Now, having observed the terrific pace of work since commencement a few months ago, we are completely filled with pleasure to commend His Excellency, Mr ‘Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State, for the support he has provided towards the rebuilding of the market; and Mr. Saheed Arowosaye, the Chairman of Oyo East Local Government Area, who is our proud member, for his dutiful commitment to the project.
We note that the Phase 1 of the project is nearing completion with with buildings already being painted. This development brings to a certain and clear perspective the hope that our people will return to the historical Akesan Market by January, as promised.
We would also like to commend the contractor, Mortayus Nigeria Limited, which has not only demonstrated capacity to handle a project of this magnitude, but also shown a rare level of love to Oyo, its base, in its approach to the project.
With what we have seen, we are optimistic the Phase 1 will be completed and commissioned as scheduled and the work Phase 2 will start immediately afterwards. We are filled with optimism that the Government of Oyo State under His Excellency, Mr Seyi Makinde, will continue to make Oyo Zone a top priority in its governance and development considerations.
We will continue to monitor the project and provide the necessary advocacy and policy support to ensure our people, who previously owned shops at Akesan before the fire incident, are not deprived of new shops when the project is completed.
