Oyo Global Forum on Monday met with Oyo State Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr Bayo Lawal, and the Commissioner for Energy, Mr Seun Ashamu, over the tragic Akesan fire of Sunday. Mr Lawal received the Forum’s letter to the Governor, Mr Seyi Makinde. The meeting was facilitated by a community leader and former Oyo Central Senator, Ms Monsurat Sunmonu.
The Forum was led to the meeting by the Chairman, Mr Olorunpoto Cephas Rahaman. Other representatives were Ms Iyabo Makinde and Mr Joel Adeniran. We emphasised the urgent need for the Government to intervene in helping people, who suffered losses, towards livelihood recovery. People should be compensated for their losses. As contained in our letter, this is even more in order because the failure of the public fire service to respond early caused the extremely ravaging impacts of the fire. Among others, we asked that Akesan be rebuilt immediately. The local economy of Oyo is anchored in the market. We also called for temporary relief measures immediately, including opening the Atiba Hall or any other place deemed suitable for the traders and demanded a thorough investigation of the cause and impacts of the incident. Please read the letter attached.
Mr Lawal, the Commissioner for Special Duties, on behalf of the Governor, assured of the Government’s readiness to take actions in line with our demands. We trust these actions will come without further delays, believing in the Governor’s avowed progressive posture.
